Several methods of breast reduction surgery exist, and your surgeon will make sure to plan your surgery so it suits your personal goals and circumstances. For example, if you don’t have excess skin that needs to be removed, liposuction alone may be enough to achieve your goals.

How long does breast reduction surgery take?

Typically, breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. The surgery usually takes about two to three hours. Once your surgeon has administered your anesthesia, and it has taken effect, your surgery can begin. Your surgeon will make the appropriate incisions, which you will have discussed beforehand, so you know what to expect. Next, your nipples will be repositioned, and your surgeon will remove excess breast tissue and fat. Your breasts will be lifted and reshaped, and your incisions will be closed. After your surgery, you will need someone to drive you home.

Is the recovery rough?

Your breasts will probably feel tender and sore for the first days after surgery. At first, your breasts will be wrapped in dressings or bandages, and you can expect to experience some swelling and bruising. You may have a tube placed under each arm to drain any fluid. Any pain can be resolved with pain medication. Most patients take about two weeks off from work. It may take up to six weeks to fully recover.

When will I see my results?

Your results should last for a lifetime. However, your results may be compromised by significant weight gain, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
